Pranayama - Breathing Exercise for Overall Health and Prosperity

Most of us are of the view that breathing is an involuntary action and doesn't require to be done in a particular way. However, most of us tend to breathe in a wrong way like taking shallow breaths, breathing through the mouth and using our chests instead of our diaphragms.

Made up of two words Prana + Ayam, Pranayam is a simple breathing exercise that involves controlling or giving rhythm to the flow of prana within the body. This particular breathing exercise involves voluntary control of breath i.e. breathe more slowly and deeply which in turn can have positive effects on the body, mind and soul.

By practicing pranayama, you train yourself to improve your breathing. Consequently, you will witness lower stress level, better blood circulation, and better functioning of autonomous body systems. Though the benefits of Pranayama are innumerable, some common benefits that improve the quality of our lives include the following.

• Healthy heart and improved Blood Circulation- Many of the heart problem arises due to heart getting insufficient oxygenated blood. Deep Pranayama breathing fills our lungs with enough oxygen. Freshly oxygenated blood travels from lungs to the heart which ultimately is pumped to every part of the body improving blood circulation.

• Effective Relief Against Stress - Pranayama is great defense against stress. Our mind is very unstable and pranayama controls the fluctuating mind and allows it becomes more focused. This deep breathing exercise provides liberation from negative thoughts, anger, depression, greed and other such depressing thoughts.

• Better Functioning of Body Organs - This sort of slow and deep breathing exercise helps in removal of toxins from the body and better distribution of oxygen to all parts of the body including the lungs, heart, diaphragm, abdomen, intestines, kidneys and pancreas. Consequently, the inception of many diseases is prevented.

• Increases the Longevity as well as Quality of Life - As a person grows in age, the lung capacity decreases as lung tissues tend to grow less and becomes less elastic. Pranayama being a low and deep breathing exercise increases the life of a creature. It lowers blood pressure and eases muscle tension.

Pranayama aims at preparing people to extend and regulate their breathing in simple way, thus providing both physical as well as mental benefits. So next time life seems to be taking a toll on you, just stop, and take a deep breath by making use of your entire lung capacity.
